Cycling on The Isle of Wight
Cycling on the Isle of Wight is a very popular pastime and all age groups find it an activity of great enjoyment. There are over 200 miles of cycle routes to take advantage of, many taking you along spectacular coastal paths or through beautiful countryside. With over half the Island designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this really is the perfect location for a cycling holiday.
Whichever part of the Island you choose to stay, you will find cycling on the Isle of Wight an absolute delight. It doesnt matter if you are a novice or experienced cyclist, there are designated routes for all fitness levels. You will find all cycle routes are well sign-posted and carefully maintained and a number of cycle paths follow some of the Islands old disused railway lines.
It is worth noting that it is free to bring a cycle over on the vehicle carrying ferries. Alternatively, if you prefer you can hire one when you arrive on the Island. With free delivery and collection to any Island location and free helmets included, this is a popular option. Hire charges are around £60 per week for an adult bike. Dont forget, whether you are cycling on the Isle of Wight on or off road, there are plenty of great pubs and cafes along the way for vital refuelling.
Every year the Island hosts the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival, which features several different cycling events for all abilities and disciplines. There is an on-road 62 mile round the Island race known as "Cycle The Wight", or for the more resilient cyclist, the 3, 7 and 14 hills challenges known as "The Hills Killer" are a real test of stamina.
