Description
Welcome to What-Knot Crafts, based in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight.
My name is John Steggles and I enjoy making items from cord and rope, which I then sell from my craft stall. We can then help with donations to the Marine Conservation Society who are trying to promote caring for our seas, shores and wildlife.
My wife Margaret and I can be found at various events mainly in the west of the Isle of Wight. If you can´t manage to see us at any of the events then perhaps you would like to visit my studio at home. Please contact me prior to your visit to make sure we are are there.
Please visit the portfolio pages on my website, which show the various items I make on the Island. Or why not come along to see the stall at different events this year.
About What-Knot Crafts
I first became interested in knotting when I was in the sea scouts many years ago! A sailor would come to show us how to tie the various knots. Then, in later years I made belts, bathroom cords and knot covered bottles. In the 1980s I became a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. This guild is now worldwide and has well over 1000 members.
How We Started
More recently I had the idea of making knot decorated walking sticks. This then led to people asking me to make things for them, like bracelets and belts. From these beginnings, What-Knot Crafts evolved. Since moving to the Isle of Wight I have become interested in using old or recycled rope to make garden ornaments amongst many other ideas.
