Description
Hillside is a charming country house and former country inn, built of stone and thatch, south facing out to sea with superb views. Backed by hills and trees and set within five acres, Hillside´s location is delightful in summer, sheltered and cosy in winter.
Hillside is situated on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, which has some of the highest sunshine records in the country. The 4 Star Isle of Wight holiday accommodation overlooks Ventnor which boasts the world famous Botanic Garden where exotic plants flourish in the warmer climate.
Victorian Ventnor with its fascinating collection of curiosity shops and eateries, its ´Blue Flag´ sea front and small harbour, is also home to the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival, The Coastal Visitors Centre and The Donkey Sanctuary, to name just a few of its attractions.
This historic country house was built circa 1789 and was visited by Charles Dickens, William Thackeray and Thomas Carlyle. It was also home to John Sterling, who had the top floor as a nursery.
The dining room is light and airy and breakfast is served at an unhurried pace at individual tables. There are three main courses and vegan and vegetarians are, of course, catered for. A sample of our breakfast menu is shown above.
Hillside also has a welcoming drawing room in which to relax, a well stocked lounge bar and a good selection of wines.
The conservatory has sea views and doors that open onto the garden, delightful in summer and providing views of the Channel and its shipping lanes.
The bottom of the garden offers a gateway straight onto National Trust property and those that brave the green heights of St. Boniface Down are rewarded with spectacular views of the Island. It is perfect here for walkers, nature lovers , bikers and dog owners.
A good packed lunch is available on request and drying facilities are provided for walkers caught out in the rain. Hillside also has ample parking and cyclists can take advantage of garaging for their bikes.
